Heavy Security Surrounds Rivers House of Assembly Ahead of Critical Sitting

A heavy security presence has been deployed at the Rivers State House of Assembly Quarters in Port Harcourt, where lawmakers are expected to convene for a crucial sitting on Monday. The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, issued a notice this morning announcing the sitting. As of the time of this report, multiple squads of police officers and operatives from the State Security Service (SSS) have been stationed at the Assembly Quarters in the state capital. While the agenda for Monday’s plenary has not yet been disclosed, sources suggest that the ongoing issues surrounding the local government administration in Rivers State will dominate discussions. This development follows a recent ruling by the Supreme Court, which ordered Amaewhule and other lawmakers to resume legislative sessions after a prolonged power struggle in the Assembly. The court’s decision last week also annulled the local government election held in Rivers State last year. In addition, the court directed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to withhold funds from the state government until it addresses what the court described as “blatant disregard” for previous court orders. The heightened security measures and the pending legal and political matters indicate that Monday’s sitting could mark a significant turning point in the ongoing disputes that have marred the state’s governance.
