Hours After Zelenskyy Agrees to 30-Day Ceasefire, Trump Orders Weapons Ban Lifted for Ukraine

According to Sky News, The United States has announced it will immediately resume military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine following Kyiv’s agreement to a U.S.-proposed 30-day ceasefire with Russia. The decision, announced after high-level talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, marks a significant shift in U.S. policy after a weeklong suspension of support intended to pressure Ukraine into peace negotiations.

The temporary ceasefire, which Ukraine has accepted, hinges on Russia’s agreement to halt all hostilities across the entire frontline, including missile strikes, drone attacks, and naval operations in the Black Sea. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the proposal “positive” but emphasized that its success depends on Moscow’s adherence. “Ukraine is ready for peace. Russia must also show whether it is ready to end the war—or continue it,” Zelenskyy said in a statement.

The Trump administration’s decision to restore aid follows a contentious period in U.S.-Ukraine relations. Last month, a heated Oval Office meeting between President Donald Trump and Zelenskyy led to the suspension of hundreds of millions of dollars in military assistance and intelligence sharing. The halt had raised concerns among European allies and hindered Ukraine’s ability to conduct counteroffensive operations against Russian forces.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who participated in the Jeddah talks, stated that the next step lies with Russia. “The ball is now in their court,” Rubio said. He confirmed that U.S. officials would deliver the ceasefire terms to Moscow through multiple channels this week. National Security Adviser Mike Waltz added that discussions also addressed Ukraine’s long-term security needs and humanitarian concerns.

President Trump expressed optimism about the ceasefire’s prospects, stating he plans to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon. “Hopefully, President Putin will agree to this also,” Trump told reporters. “And we can get this show on the road.”

While the ceasefire offers hope for de-escalation, analysts caution that its implementation remains uncertain. Russia has yet to respond officially, and previous ceasefires have failed due to violations by both sides. However, Ukrainian officials remain hopeful that this initiative could lead to broader peace talks.

The resumption of U.S. military aid provides critical relief for Kyiv as it continues to face Russian advances in contested regions. As Zelenskyy noted, “The time has come for the whole truth.” Whether Moscow will seize this opportunity for peace remains to be seen.
