Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, the head of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, discussed the ongoing debate about Ramadan fasting and school closures in Nigeria.
In a recent interview with CHANNELSTV, Rafsanjani explained that many people misunderstand the issue. He pointed out that in countries like Saudi Arabia and Egypt, there is no official holiday for Ramadan, which is different from what some Nigerians believe.
He also talked about the attitude of some religious groups in Nigeria, where both Muslims and Christians sometimes feel superior to each other. Rafsanjani mentioned that this attitude often exists even when people do not truly follow their faith.
Hear him,
“This has nothing to do with Islamic holidays. If you look at Muslim countries all over the world, such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, and Iran, there is nothing like Ramadan holiday as part of Religious holiday. We should have that understanding, you know, in Nigeria, many Muslims believe they are superior to others, the same applies also to Christians, who often believe that they are the most correct Christians compared to others in the world. Many Nigerians hold this arrogant belief, even though, at times, the fear of God is absent in their conduct.”
