The Nigerian military high command has confirmed the death of six soldiers and the elimination of 34 terrorists in a fierce clash at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Sabon Gari, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State.
The encounter, which occurred on January 4, 2025, was an attempt by ISWAP/Boko Haram fighters to retaliate the recent killing of their commander and combatants by Nigerian troops.
Director of Defence Media Operations, Major-General Edward Buba, disclosed that the terrorists, riding on motorcycles and gun trucks, launched a surprise attack on the FOB. However, troops on a fighting patrol foiled their plans, and reinforcements, including elements of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), vigilantes, and hybrid forces, arrived promptly to overpower the attackers.

Despite the success, the military reported the loss of six personnel and injuries sustained by a vigilante commander who stepped on an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
Major-General Buba urged media outlets and the public to respect the confidentiality of the identities of the fallen soldiers to allow for proper notification of their next of kin.
