‘We are sorry’ – Presidency apologizes over errors in federal appointments list

The Presidency has issued an apology regarding errors found in the list of political appointments recently released by the government.

According to Daily Post, the list was made public in an effort to counter allegations that President Bola Tinubu’s appointments have been lopsided, favoring people from his ethnic background.

Critics, including opposition figures, have accused the President of neglecting other regions of the country in his appointments.

Notably, Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, voiced concerns on Arise Television, claiming that the President had violated the federal character principle by making disproportionate appointments.

Ndume, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), asserted that as a lawmaker, it was his right to criticize the President on this matter, despite their party affiliation.

In response, the Presidency released a breakdown of the President’s appointments, showing figures from different regions: 29 appointees from the South West, 35 from the North West, 22 from the South-South, 16 from the South East, 25 from North Central, and 24 from the North East.

However, the list was criticized for excluding key figures, such as the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, further fuelling claims of regional imbalance, especially with the South East underrepresented.

The error in the list was widely discussed on social media, prompting an apology from the Special Adviser to the President on Media & Public Communication, Sunday Dare.

On X (formerly Twitter), Dare acknowledged the mistake, stating, “We have noticed a number of errors in the list of appointments tweeted. We are sorry.

We will provide an updated list later, thank you.”

However, Dare did not offer an explanation for the omission of Gbajabiamila’s name.
